Madonna Releases Statement Explaining Crucifix Scene From Confessions
Tour

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 21, 2006 -- As Madonna's
Confessions Tour comes to an end in Japan this week, the artist has
released a statement regarding the much talked about Crucifixion scene.

"I am very grateful that my show was so well received all over the
world. But there seems to be many misinterpretations about my appearance
on the cross and I wanted to explain it myself once and for all.

"There is a segment in my show where three of my dancers 'confess' or
share harrowing experiences from their childhood that they ultimately
overcame. My 'confession' follows and takes place on a Crucifix that I
ultimately come down from. This is not a mocking of the church. It is no
different than a person wearing a Cross or 'Taking Up the Cross' as it
says in the Bible. My performance is neither anti-Christian,
sacrilegious or blasphemous. Rather, it is my plea to the audience to
encourage mankind to help one another and to see the world as a unified
whole. I believe in my heart that if Jesus were alive today he would be
doing the same thing.

"My specific intent is to bring attention to the millions of children in
Africa who are dying every day, and are living without care, without
medicine and without hope. I am asking people to open their hearts and
minds to get involved in whatever way they can. The song ends with a
quote from the Bible's Book of Matthew:

"'For I was hungry and you gave me food. I was naked and you gave me
clothing. I was sick and you took care of me and God replied, "Whatever
you did for the least of my brothers... you did it to me."'

"Please do not pass judgment without seeing my show."

Madonna's "Confessions Tour - Live From London" is scheduled to air on
NBC this November. NBC has not confirmed whether they will include this
portion of the show in their broadcast.

The artist is scheduled to come to New York at the end of October to
promote her new children's book "The English Roses - Too Good To Be
True" and has also announced her plans for a trip to Malawi for several
weeks in November to participate in the building of an orphanage and
care center for the children of that country (www.raisingmalawi.com).

Watch Madonna legally on YouTube

In a move which can only seem to benefit fans, Warners and YouTube has
come to an agreement to allow music/video copyrighted by Warners to be
allowed on YouTube legally - with Warners and YouTube sharing the
advertising revenue but without causing problems for the fans uploading
the material:

Music videos from artists like Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sean
Paul will be legally available for the first time on YouTube, a popular
online video sharing site, after signing its first commercial
partnership with Warner Music Group.

YouTube, which has over 100 million video viewed everyday, and Warner
Music, the world's fourth biggest record company, said on Monday that
the pact would help Warner distribute music videos, behind-the-scenes
footage, artist interviews and original programming.

The companies said YouTube users would also be able to incorporate music
from Warner's catalog into the videos they create and upload.

Music videos belonging to Warner Music and other record companies are
regularly uploaded to YouTube by its users but usually without
permission from the labels.

The partnership, which has been in discussions for months, was signed
late on Sunday afternoon. It comes just days after Universal Music
Group, which is owned by Vivendi, described YouTube and News Corp.'s
social networking site MySpace of being 'copyright infringers' who he
said owe the music industry 'tens of millions of dollars.'

The strong language has prompted speculation that a lawsuit is imminent
from Universal or some other owner of copyrighted material.

YouTube and Warner Music said the deal would enable both parties to
generate and share revenue created by advertising, which will be
featured around the videos.

YouTube said it would use a new advanced content identification and
royalty reporting system, set for release by the end of the year, to
identify the music videos and help manage payment to the record labels.

It said YouTube and Warner Music would share revenue from advertising on
both music videos uploaded by the artist and user uploaded videos that
incorporate audio and audiovisual works from Warner's catalog.

Pop queen Madonna has revealed that her short new platinum blonde
'haircut' is in actual fact a wig.

The Material Girl caused a stir when she showed off her new look on
Tuesday at a Tokyo photography exhibition in Japan.

But the truth was revealed when Madonna took to the stage in the Tokyo
Dome with her hair back to its normal long curly style.

And the singer, whose Confessions world tour ended on Thursday, donned
the wig, which was created by hairdresser Andy LeCompte for the filming
of Madonna's next video, for the last few sets of her concert in Tokyo.

Subject: NBC Mulling Madonna Concert Cuts
Date sent: Thu 21/09/2006 4:55 AM

Madonna will very likely express herself under the watchful eye of NBC
censors.

The bigwigs at the Peacock network haven't decided yet if they will show
the Queen of Pop staging her controversial mock crucifixion when it airs
her forthcoming concert special, Live To Tell, recorded during the
latest leg of her mega-selling Confessions World Tour.

Madonna, 48, has sparked a firestorm of criticism from Christian leaders
for the act, in which the Material One sings "Live To Tell" while
suspended from a giant mirrored cross, wearing a crown of thorns. Images
of AIDS-stricken African children and other impoverished Third World
residents are projected behind her during the number.

As of press time, NBC said it was reserving judgement on whether it
would jettison the crucifixion scene until the filmmakers submitted the
special and network executives could review the program in its entirety.

"At this point, we're awaiting delivery of the special and once we
receive it we'll take a look at it before making a final decision [as to
any cuts]," an NBC spokeswoman told E! Online.

Despite Madonna's attempt to raise awareness about global ills via the
eye-catching stunt, both the Vatican and the Russian Orthodox Church
condemned her performance as an affront to Christianity, claiming that
the leotard-wearing singer is in need of spiritual help and encouraging
people to boycott the disco-themed shows.

During gigs in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and England, Madonna was
taken to task by protesters who voiced their anger and indignation
regarding the Jesus-channeling routine without even seeing it.

Prosecutors in Dusseldorf even went so far as to threaten to bring
charges against the singer for insulting religious beliefs, but after
seeing the biblical imagery in question, admitted no offense had been
committed and let her off the hook.

Ironically, if there was any crime, it was by religious figures
themselves, such as the priest in Amsterdam who called in a phony bomb
threat in an attempt to stop a pair of September shows from going
forward.

No word yet when the Live to Tell broadcast will take place, but the NBC
spokesperson said the network is prepping the special for November
sweeps.

If Madonna's cross routine is nixed, fans have to wonder what kind of
confessions the suits at NBC will go for in a racy two-hour affair that
also features the "Hung Up" performer using a horseback riding crop to
"whip" her male dancers into shape during the opening number "Future
Lover;" and crooning "Like a Virgin" as she executes a naughty pole
dance atop a merry-go-round horse hovering over the audience.

Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary, was unavailable for comment.

However, NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly has suggested
that--like it or not--what may be right for a concert venue may not be
suitable for primetime and the pop icon is keenly aware of that.

"She's not revising her act," he told a gathering at the annual
Television Critics Association press tour in July. "We've discussed what
content will be in and what is out, and we've come to a healthy place
that represents her show but is appropriate for television."

Reilly noted that they'll decide later on which numbers would be
included in the special, adding that "we're not going to make any
piece-meal edits."

Madonna is set to officially wrap her Confessions trek tomorrow night at
the Tokyo Dome in Japan, and according to Billboard, this latest concert
jaunt makes it the top-grossing tour ever for a female artist.

Citing tentative estimates from tour producer Arthur Fogel, the trade
reported that Madonna grossed $193.7 million from 60 shows drawn from
1.2 million in paid attendance, narrowly besting the $192.5 million
earned by Cher's never ending Farewell tour from 2002 to 2005.

NY Daily News.com:

Madge & NBC star-crossed?

The material girl may have a falling out with the Peacock network.

It seems that creative differences over a controversial crucifixion
scene in Madonna's current tour could spell the end for NBC's
long-planned special on her concert.

NBC programming officials are expected to ask Madonna's camp to cut the
scene in which she's hung on a cross wearing a crown of thorns while
singing "Live to Tell."

Madonna's camp is expected to reject the change and then pull the show
from NBC completely.

A spokeswoman for Madonna said yesterday she would issue a statement,
perhaps as early as today, about the special and the cross scene.

A network spokeswoman said yesterday, "NBC is awaiting delivery of the
special. Once we see it in its entirety, we'll make a final decision."

Since Madonna's "Confessions" tour began, she has been slammed by church
officials around the world for the scene, which has been labeled hostile
to the Catholic Church. Madonna's representatives have said it's not
disrespectful at all.

Word is the contract for the special, scheduled to air in November, has
provisions so both sides can walk away from the deal if they fail to
agree on what would or would not be broadcast.

Date sent: Fri 22/09/2006 2:24 AM

The American Family Association (AFA) has asked NBC to cancel its
Madonna special (CONFEESIONS TOUR LIVE FROM PARIS), which is scheduled
for broadcast November 22nd.

"I write to ask you to cancel this program which makes a mockery of the
crucifixion of Christ,” AFA chairman Donald E. Wildmon told NBC chairman
Robert Wright in the letter.

Reportedly, Madonna will appear on a crucifix during the NBC program, an
act she has done during previous concerts.

"Making mockery of the crucifixion of Christ has been a trademark of
Madonna for many years. I am sure you recall that in 1989 she had a
video for the hit song ‘Like A Prayer.’ The video featured burning
crosses, statues crying blood and Madonna — representing Jesus — freeing
a saint from his sexual repression by seducing him. This is the same
Madonna who once said, ‘Crucifixes are sexy because there’s a naked man
on them,’” Wildmon wrote.

Wildmon told Knight that there are millions of Christians who consider
the crucifixion of Christ as the supreme act of a God who, because of
His love, was willing to endure that crucifixion for the forgiveness of
our sins.

He encouraged individuals to call their local NBC affiliates and ask
them not to air the special if NBC refuses to cancel it.

Glenn: Let's beat them at their own game - sign the petition and ask
NBC to show the concert and ignore the AFA.

H&M profit tops consensus, stock climbs 4.5 pct By Simon Johnson and
Rebecka Kihlstrom

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Swedish fashion giant Hennes & Mauritz AB (HMb.ST)
posted third-quarter pretax profit above consensus on Wednesday while
its August sales also beat expectations, sending its shares up over 4.5
percent.

H&M said its gross and operating margins for the quarter were the best
ever for the period from June to August.

The underwear-to-suits maker said in a statement the improvement in
margins came "mainly due to a more efficient purchasing process that has
led to lower buying prices."

H&M, which brought in Madonna for its autumn fashion campaign, had
pretax profit of 3.77 billion Swedish crowns ($516 million) in the third
quarter. Chief executive Rolf Eriksen said a track-suit the star helped
to design had been a top seller.

Analysts' average forecast for the quarter was 3.60 billion in a Reuters
poll after a profit of 3.32 billion a year earlier.

Sales for comparable stores in August rose 5 percent year-on-year,
against a forecast of 3 percent.

By 1015 GMT, the stock was up 4.6 percent at 305.50 crowns compared with
a slight rise on the DJ Stoxx European retail index (^SXRP - news).

"There isn't much more to say than that it is extremely good, we had
expected a little weaker report," said Henrik Schultz, analyst at Danske
Bank.

The third quarter gross margin was 59.2 percent, against a forecast of
58.4 percent and 58.8 percent a year earlier.

But the firm added that price cuts had been greater in the third quarter
due to a higher inventory level at the start of the period. This cut the
margin by 0.3 percentage points, giving an overall 0.4 point rise in the
margin from a year earlier.

H&M said its inventory level at the beginning of August was
"well-balanced both in volume and content."

The third-quarter operating margin was 21.8 percent against 21.4 percent
a year earlier. Eriksen declined to give an outlook on margins.

MADONNA EFFECT

"It looks very strong. The gross margin, which was stronger than
expected, stands out in particular,"
said a second analyst. "That bodes well for the fourth quarter."

Eriksen said the Madonna deal had got massive media attention. "We have
been very satisfied with sales of Madonna's track-suit, it's been the
number one on our top-selling list for a couple of weeks," he said.

H&M said in July it would provide a wardrobe for Madonna and her stage
crew while on tour as part of a long-term agreement with the singer.

Eriksen said plans for a separately branded chain for men and women, to
be launched in spring 2007, were on track, with around 10 stores due
next year.

"The first boutique we will open, we will open in Regent Street in
London," Eriksen said.

He also mentioned Hamburg and Cologne in Germany as target cities for
the new niche stores which will aim at a higher price segment than H&M's
current stores.

The company expects to open 80 new H&M stores in the fourth quarter to
add to its 1,264 already open.

H&M and Spanish rival Inditex (ITX.MC) both trade at around 23 times
estimated 2006 earnings, according to analysts in Reuters Estimates.

Since that time, among female artists, only Celine Dion (the overall
leader with 30) and Mariah Carey (17) have more.

Over on Hot AC/Adult Top 40, Madonna's "Jump" is bubbling under the

Madonna's 'Confessions' Tour Sets Record

September 20, 2006, 10:55 AM ET

Ray Waddell, Nashville

Madonna will wrap her Confessions tour tomorrow (Sept. 21) at the Tokyo
Dome as the top-grossing tour ever by a female artist. Although final
numbers are not all in, tour producer Arthur Fogel puts the tally at
$193.7 million from 60 shows that drew nearly 1.2 million in paid
attendance.

That gross narrowly puts Madonna over Cher's benchmark of $192.5
million. However, it took Cher an endurance-testing 273 shows between
June 2002 and April 2005 to reach that mark on her marathon Farewell
tour.

Madonna's Confessions tour followed the same model of the $125
million-grossing Re-Invention tour in 2004 and the $75 million-grossing
Drowned World tour in 2001.

Rather than visit 100 global markets a la mega acts like the Rolling
Stones and U2, Madonna opted to play multiple nights in a limited number
of major international locales. The strategy has led to a staggering
$400 million in ticket sales in just six years.
