Date sent: Fri 19/09/2003 10:15 PM WHAT IF MADONNA HAD KISSED PINK? IT ALMOST HAPPENED... But the party starter decided to go on vacation instead of to rehearsals. It was a moment that captivated the nation, but what would it have been like if Madonna had picked different kissmates for her VMA performance? As it turns out, Pink was supposed to be there too. "It was originally supposed to be different people involved," Pink told MTV News Europe, "but I didn't even know [what was going to happen during the performance]. The kiss wasn't even talked about." Rumors had been rampant before the Video Music Awards that Madonna would be taking the stage with representatives of the younger pop generation, but talk had centered mostly on Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez. Pink escaped the rumor mill because she backed out before rehearsals began. "I had one vacation all year," Pink explained, "and I was not leaving my vacation to go into a rehearsal studio, which sounds ridiculous, but you know, I just said, 'I can't be at those rehearsals, but I can learn it for that day, and I'm sure that I'll be more than capable of doing it.' " That proposal, however, wasn't acceptable, and Pink was taken out of the running. But since she was only apprised of the singing aspect of the performance, not the kissing, it begs the question: Had scheduling not been a problem, would she have been willing to make out with Madonna? She says yes and insists she's amused that the same-sex liplock generated so many headlines (see "Madonna Smooches With Britney And Christina; Justin, Coldplay Win Big At VMAs"). "I'm very surprised that kisses, or girl-on-girl, or guy-on-guy, is that interesting still, to this day," she laughed. This report is from MTV News. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Dave Gardner [keydave@hotmail.com] Subject: Britney lyrics Date sent: Tue 23/09/2003 3:46 AM FROM A MESSAGE BOARD Here are the lyrics, taken from BMG Brazil: "All my people in the crowd Grab a partner take it down! The mockney Lock Stock director will be behind the camera on the shoot for Me Against The Music, in which Madonna, who collaborates on the track, will play a typically modest role. Her Madge will play a leather-clad dominatrix with a string of semi-naked 'bitches' on leashes. It isn't known if Britney will play one of those bitches. The video will see Madonna playing the matriarch of a nightclub, who lures innocent scantily-clad Britney into a private room filled with other scantily-clad young women. Fans will see parallels with the tongue-fest enjoyed by the two singers at the recent MTV Video Awards, when her Madge took the lead (and saliva) with both Britters and Christina Aguilera. Denials followed, however, with Madonna claiming since that it was the Hit Me Baby singer who instigated the lip-lock. 'In all the rehearsals it was pecking,' Mrs Ritchie swore. No doubt all the rehearsals for the forthcoming video will feature no leather or leashes. Considering how much Guy seemed to enjoy his wife's performance at the MTV show, the Snatch director will have little trouble shooting, though cynics suggest it isn't a good idea for the couple to work together again, ever, after Swept Away.=20 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Keneseo@aol.com Subject: Steve Nicks slams Madonna Date sent: Thu 25/09/2003 6:05 AM FROM IMDB.COM: STEVIE NICKS SLAMS MADONNA Fleetwood Mac legend Stevie Nicks has lambasted pop superstar Madonna for kissing Britney Spears at the MTV VMA Awards - deeming she is too old to kiss youngsters. She says, "Madonna is too old to be kissing someone who is 22 (sic)." And the veteran singer also slammed Spears and fellow Madonna-kisser Christina Aguilera for their raunchy images. For some imaginative pop fans, the news that Madonna and Britney Spears recorded a song together may have conjured images of long, languid studio sessions, punctuated by the occasional soul kiss. The truth is slightly less lurid. Spears originally completed the track ''Me Against the Music,'' by herself, and even sang the Madonna-free version of it Sept. 4 at the NFL season kickoff. ''The song was done -- and then we added Madonna,''' says producer/songwriter Tricky Stewart (Blu Cantrell, Mya) who recorded the track with his Atlanta-based RedZone Entertainment team. The Material Mom didn't glom onto the club banger -- the first single from Spears' Nov. 18 album ''In the Zone'' -- until after her tongue-tastic performance with the younger singer at the MTV Video Music Awards. ''Britney played the song for Madonna and she really, really liked it,'' explains Penelope Magnet, a RedZone-affiliated 19-year-old songwriter/producer who coproduced and wrote most of the lyrics for ''Me Against the Music'' (it'll be her first professional credit). Predictably, Madonna took charge after RedZone handed over the song to her, arranging and recording her vocal additions on her own. (Madonna's publicist confirmed the producers' account of the collaboration; Spears' rep didn't respond to a request for comment.) ''She does what she wants to do,'' says Stewart. ''She's Madonna. If she says she wants to keep something, it stays on there.'' So on the finished track, she and Spears trade lines in the verses, making the song a true duet. Though the lyrics hardly represent a radical step forward for Spears (the refrain is ''All you people on the floor/Let me see you dance''), ''Me Against the Music'' is the 21-year-old's most aggressively danceable single. Retrofunk guitars rub against a rapid breakbeat as Spears and Madonna sing of the pleasures of letting loose on the dance floor (''I'm up against the speaker/Trying to take on the music/It's like a competition'') -- a subject they each know well. ''Britney likes to be bold in her visuals and be more lighthearted in the lyrical sense,'' says Stewart. ''She doesn't like things that make her sound like she was taking herself too seriously.'' Serious or not, if the song sounds sweaty, it's no accident. During Spears' time with RedZone this summer, the recording studio's air-conditioning died for three days, but she refused to abandon the increasingly sultry session. ''The equipment made the room so hot that it was unbearable, but she worked through that,'' says Magnet. ''She didn't complain or anything, and for me that shows she's where she is for a reason.'' The same production team also wrote and produced the ''In the Zone'' song ''The Hook-Up'' -- Spears' first stab at reggae. In addition, they helped develop tracks submitted by R. Kelly (''Outrageous'') and Moby (''Early Mornin''') into finished Spears songs (like Madonna, neither Kelly nor Moby joined Spears in the studio). Says Stewart, ''The vibe that I got was this album is Britney's coming-out party.'' Funny, that's what we would have said about that VMA performance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Keneseo@aol.com Subject: Madonna sued over Hollywood video Date sent: Tue 30/09/2003 7:51 PM Photographer's son sues Madonna Claims singer copied father's images Tuesday, September 30, 2003 Posted: 1:00 PM EDT (1700 GMT) NEW YORK (AP) -- A fashion photographer's son has sued Madonna, saying the singer copied his late father's images in a set of videos for her song "Hollywood." Samuel Bourdin claims he holds the rights to the images created by his father, Guy Bourdin, who died in 1991. The lawsuit, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, accuses Madonna of copyright infringement for her imitation of poses and images in at least 11 works of Bourdin, whose photos were published in French Vogue from the mid-1950s through the late 1980s. Samuel Bourdin seeks unspecified damages from the 45-year-old pop star and companies and individuals involved in production of the videos. A message left with a publicist for Madonna was not immediately returned. According to the lawsuit, Bourdin is recognized as one of the most influential fashion photographers for his highly constructed compositions in unusual settings. The lawsuit includes comparisons of Bourdin's photographs with video images of Madonna. In one Bourdin picture, a scantily clad woman peers into a round mirror. Madonna does the same. In another Bourdin picture, a woman squats on a floor with what appears to be a large television-size screen between her legs. Madonna does the same. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Matthew J Chojnacki [matthewcho@juno.com] Subject: Madonna's Regrets and Moral Lessons Date sent: Thu 2/10/2003 2:29 AM http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/Entertainment/GMA031001Madonna_Sawyer .html 'If I Had Only Known' Madonna's Regrets and Moral Lessons N E W Y O R K, Oct. 1- When Madonna released her first book - Sex - 11 years ago, no one could have predicted her follow-up would be a children's book filled with moral lessons. But the former "material girl" says she's changed since Sex, despite her recent controversial opened-mouth kiss with Britney Spears at the MTV Video Music Awards. "I have a right to write any book I want about anything. And the books that I'm writing now are a reflection of who I am and what I value in the world," Madonna told ABCNEWS' Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America. Madonna's sexually charged onstage performances may lead some to believe she's sending mixed messages, but the ever-changing star says everything she does is a reflection of all of her experiences. The singer's children's story, The English Roses, was published simultaneously around the world Sept. 15 and will top The New York Times' children's list for the Oct. 5 edition. The story focuses on four fashionable 11-year-old girls who envy a neighborhood girl named Binah. They belive Binah, who is beautiful, has a perfect life, so they exclude her from their group. Then, through the assistance of a feisty fairy godmother, they see that not everything is what it seems. The girls see that Binah lives alone with her father and spends her childhood days doing all the household chores. Madonna - now a wife and mother of two young children - says the story is one that's close to her heart. Her own mother died when she was just a young girl, and she admits that she never had friends who were part of the cool crowd at school. She says music and dancing provided an early escape. Lonely Girl "I felt pretty lonely until I discovered dancing," Madonna said. "I think I was about 13 or 14. Yeah, I felt pretty much on my own." And the moral lessons? She claims those come from personal experiences that she learned from a little later in her life. "I think there's been a lot of times where I wish I wouldn't have said something that was unkind or, you know, acted selfishly or egotistically," Madonna said. "When I was just looking straight forward and I had blinders, and I didn't care about how my behavior affected other people, and I was thinking 'oh, you know, just give me more, just give me more.' I mean, you know, fame is very intoxicating." Madonna says she wrote The English Roses because she felt like telling this particular story at this point in her life. And although she admits she has some regrets when it comes to the ways she has treated others over the years, she says she has no regrets when it comes to her work. Everything from "Like a Virgin" to Sex still has meaning to her. "When I published Sex, that was a subject that I was interested in exploring. And to me they're both reflections of who I was and who I am now. It's a, you know, kind of development of me," she said. Madonna's new role as a children's author has been slightly overshadowed by her controversial smooch with Britney Spears at the 20th annual MTV Video Music Awards in late August. A Haunting Kiss "If I had only known," Madonna said. The singer/author says she's heard more jokes than she can bear from just about everyone since the smooch. "'You didn't kiss me like that' - yeah, they do. And I say 'well, you didn't dance with me like that' and that usually shuts them up," she said. Madonna says she will continue to take her performances wherever she pleases. She says she won't begin to set boundaries for herself in the years to come and she makes no apologies when it comes to her MTV stunt or her recent GAP ads with hip-hop star Missy Elliot. "No, I think those things are important . I live in the world and I am a part of the world, of the physical world, and for me to be able to have the ability to reach people and to share whatever I know, I need to have a platform to stand on. So I need to work in both worlds, so to speak," she said. The provocative performer says one of the lessons she wants to share with the "physical world" is what she has learned about our control over our own desitiny. "I think we're all in charge of our rockets," Madonna said. "And, you know, if they take us to good places or they take us to bad places, it's because we steered them there." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: JimmyRad [jimmyrad@sunqwest.net] Subject: MATM 12" Released 10/21? The single will serve as a milestone for the "First Listen" program, as it is the 100th track streamed in its 21-month existence. "Me Against the Music" is the lead track from the Jive Records artist's heavily anticipated fourth album, "In the Zone," due Nov. 18. The song was co-written by Spears and produced by Redzone. Brandy's "What About Us?" in January 2002 became the first single offered to AOL users through the program, which streams world premieres of new music. Other prominent artists to be featured in the initiative include Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, 50 Cent, Dixie Chicks, Nelly, Josh Groban, Beyonce and Christina Aguilera. "In the Zone" is the follow-up to Spears' 2001 album "Britney," which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 4.2 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. HOW WILL BRITNEY SHOCK US NEXT? Her new video is fueling racy rumors As pop tart Britney Spears' outrageous behavior hits new highs, loyal fans are bound to blame Madonna, her companion in controversy, for leading her astray. But while the stars did share a sloppy kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards, reports that Madonna's husband Guy Ritchie will direct Britney and his wife in an S&M-themed video for Spears' new single "Me Against The Music" have been overhyped. " Guy Ritchie is not directing," Madonna's rep Liz Rosenberg tells Star. "It's mostly a performance video. No dominatrix S&M stuff. Madonna did that years ago and you know she doesn't repeat herself. Paul Hunter is directing and the details are changing constantly." As for Madonna advising Spears, Rosenberg continues, "I don't really think Britney needs career advice. 'Mentor' is too strong a word. I think Britney has respect for Madonna and they enjoy working together." Madonna and Britney collaborated on the song from Britney's new album Get In the Zone, slated for release on Nov. 18, and the older star has been schooling Spears in the Kabbalah religion. "Britney is vulnerable and confused at the moment," a Spears source told Star. "She idolizes Madonna. She thinks that by following in Madonna's footsteps she'll achieve 'staying power' long after her music gets tired." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: matthewcho@juno.com Subject: Coelho Confident as Alchemist Heads for Screen Date sent: Wed 8/10/2003 5:04 PM FRANKFURT, Germany (Reuters) - Paulo Coelho ranks with JK Rowling and John Grisham as one of the world's most successful writers and now Hollywood is at last bringing his cult classic "The Alchemist" to the silver screen. The Brazilian author believes that "Matrix" star Laurence Fishburne will do justice to the book, the tale of an Andalusian shepherd who takes to the desert in search of treasure. "I am confident he can make a good movie. He is directing, he wrote the screenplay and he is acting as the Alchemist," Coelho told Reuters at the Frankfurt Book Fair where he is publicizing his erotic new novel "Eleven Minutes." Coelho, who met Fishburne in London, said: "He is a nice guy and very sensitive. He is a person that I really trust." British actor Jeremy Irons and U.S. pop icon Madonna also play leading roles in the film, which has an $80 million budget. Warner Bros Pictures plans to start filming in Jordan by the end of this year for scheduled release in 2004. The bearded Brazilian author has climbed steadily to reach the rarefied ranks of multimillion-selling novelists. The first edition of the Alchemist in 1988 sold only 900 copies and its publisher decided not to reprint. But a larger publisher picked it up two years later. "At the end of the day it is a mystery -- how can I sell 55 million copies in so many countries and have such a faithful readership," he asked. But the 56-year-old writer is certainly no shrinking violet about the statistics. "They made some research about two years ago. I was in third place. Rowling was in first place, the second was Grisham and I was third. I think that I am now probably selling more than John Grisham." "Coelhomania" erupted among his devoted fans who queued for up to six hours in Berlin and London at recent signing sessions. Celebrity fans abound. Of "The Alchemist," Madonna said: "It is a beautiful book about magic, dreams and the treasures we seek elsewhere and then find on our doorstep." But critics have torn into his "mind, body and spirit" literature, saying he spouts trite and simplistic truisms about finding your inner path. "Spiritual twaddle," wrote one British critic. Coelho is unperturbed. "I read critics but I don't listen to them. But I am glad they exist because they provoke me and they provoke my readers. "They are tough but I am tough also. An angry, polemical reaction is always a compliment. Otherwise it would be a no man's land." His latest book is called "Eleven Minutes" because its heroine, a Brazilian prostitute working in Switzerland, calculated that is how long sex takes on average. The book, inspired by the manuscript left at his hotel once by a prostitute working in Europe, certainly does not hold back on the steamy and sado-masochistic sex. But Coelho is well pleased with the results -- "I have never had such a reaction from my readers -- it was very positive." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: SomethingJewish [leslie@somethingjewish.co.uk] Subject: Madonna's use of Kabbalah and Judaism slammed Date sent: Tue 7/10/2003 1:38 PM Madonna and her use of Kabbalah and Judaism slammed by leading Rabbi "Madonna has taken the Zohar, the book of luminosity, and made it dark," Rabbi says 7 October 2003 - Pop queen Madonna has been criticised by a leading Rabbi for the way she is embracing Kabbalah and other aspects of Judaism. Writing on SomethingJewish (www.somethingjewish.co.uk), Rabbi Shmuley Boteach says of Madonna: "Kabbalah argues for the spiritual supremacy of women over men, for feminine transcendence over masculine imminence, and feminine radiance over masculine expedience. Yet Madonna has spent her career dishonouring women, portraying them as chunks of meat bereft of personalities or even souls." Rabbi Boteach is the author of international best-sellers Kosher Sex, Dating Secrets of the Ten Commandments and Dreams. His most recent book, The Private Adam: Becoming a Hero in a Selfish Age looks at how celebrities have been elevated to hero status over more 'worthy' role models, and how the balance can be redressed. Rabbi Boteach adds in his syndicated column: "Madonna has taken the Zohar - "the book of luminosity" - and made it dark. While Judaism will always flourish with spiritual seekers, it will founder with publicity-seekers. God promised Abraham that his children would be "like the stars of the heaven," not the stars of the silver screen. The stars of heaven give light amid an all-encompassing darkness, and, indeed, the Jewish nation has retained its righteousness in a dark and cruel world. But movie stars are counterfeit constellations, artificially illuminated fakes set in a world of make believe. Far from aggrandizing Kabbalah, Madonna's practice of it sends the message that one can be mystical without being spiritual, and one can claim to be holy while having lost all dignity." On the issue that Madonna is promoting Judaism, Rabbi Boteach remains firm. "Should we not embrace her as our saviour and princess, the woman who renounced Catholicism in favour of Judaism? The woman who helped make Judaism sexy? No. And here's why. The fact that Judaism is becoming increasingly dependent on depraved pop cultural icons to make it appeal to the masses is a sign of desperation rather than achievement, failure rather than success." In fact, if anything, the one-time teen queen is more renowned than ever before. But now it's time for Brit to prove that her provocative state of undress and various sexcapades are only sidelines to her primary purpose here-hit songs. "Me Against the Music" is frantically busy, with Spears' voice often a mere accessory amid a swirl of rapid-fire lyrics, background vocals and a frenetic pogo-stick beat. After repeated listens, however, the party-anthem rhythms sort themselves out and ripen into a series of infectious, albeit quirky, hooks. It's still much more a jam du jour than a song-there's no real melody-but radio will be licking this up like a cherry lollipop. The other shortfall: Madonna. She comes off like a great-aunt poseur, much like the Gap ads. Oops, she did it again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Glenn Turner [glenn@glenn-turner.com] Subject: MATM Music Video Details Date sent: Sun 12/10/2003 1:36 PM Taken from http://www.britneyzpears.com/z_ehome.htm: * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * This is what someone wrote about what he saw at the MATM Video Shoot in New York. The person that wrote this wrote it on WoB Forums. Ok guys, just like my own insider gave me the scoops for VMA's, this time is this Britney/Madonna video shoot, enjoy : Filmed three days, Oct. 8-9-10 Silver Studios East, Queens Guy Ritchie left the studio... at 2:45. He was wearing jeans and a blue Adidas-looking zipper jacket. He walked around the lot a little, hugged a woman who had been hanging outside Madonna's bus. And then he left the lot altogether. Madonna and Britney's busses were parked right night to each other. Eventually, the driver reversed Madonna's bus, so her bus door was adjacent to Britney's bus door. At one point in the afternoon, Madonna went inside Britney's bus. Britney hung outside her bus with Columbus and smoked during breaks. At one point, Columbus yelled something to Britney as she went in her bus, and Britney came out with a lighter. A pit bull got injured on the set. In the video, the pit bull has some part. A lot of the crew were laughing because the pit bull, which got walked around the lot often, was entering the door when someone opened it - on its toe, and its toenail fell off. The pit bull shrieked loudly, and the owner flipped out. "Oh, my God! How could this happen!" Apparently, the pit bull is an actor. "Call 911" someone yelled. "If you need to take it to the hospital." But the pit bull was fine after everyone relaxed. The owner pulled it aside to a quiet part of the parking lot. The concept of the video is that Britney and Madonna are in a club trying to find each other. They're communicating telepathically. Soon, it becomes a cat and mouse chase, and there is a maze. Britney is in the hipster part of the club. She wears a tie around her neck (think Avril Lavigne) and the backup people have streaks purple hair, bright pink hair, dress in Urban Outfitters-type gear. One guy had a hip white jacket and a tie around his neck and wore a T-shirt. Madonna, wearing a white pants suit, is hanging out among businessmen in suits. At one point in the vid, Brit is on a huge swing, and there's a lot of smoke. The video is directed by Paul Hunter, who has directed a lot of hip hop videos. Britney and Madonna would throw in suggestions and offer input to Hunter. It wasn't just the director in charge . No cell phones were allowed on the set, which seemed to irritate the crew more than "all of the waiting" between shoots. "They won't allow us to bring cell phones on the set. This is the first time I'm checking my voicemail," I overheard someone say. Also, no recording devices, cameras, cell phone, nothing was allowed on the set, per the request of Britney and Madonna. Britney kept requesting Starbucks. I counted about three Starbucks runs. Britney did not seem daunted by all of the work. She was giddy and playful. She playfully punched bodyguard at one point, but mostly smoked and talked to people from her team. She did not appear lovey-dovey with Columbus. At one point, someone arrived on the set with an OK! magazine (the large English tabloid), and everyone was pointing to a picture and laughing. At 7:53 p.m. Columbus followed Britney into her bus. Rocco was on the set with the nanny a lot. I was sitting on a forklift, and Rocco came up and pretended to drive it. He was playing on the ground. The nanny would fly him around as if he were an airplane. He was on the video set because when I first saw him, Madonna was holding him as she walked off the set to her bus. During one of the breaks, Britney and Madonna were kneeling in front of Rocco outside of Britney's bus door. Britney was asking him how old he was. "Are you this many?" she'd ask, holding up her fingers. Madonna had two personal umbrella handlers at all times, so no one could photograph her. Othertimes, she walked around freely - she has this cool swagger or saunter when she walks - on to the set. She definitely had a presence. Britey's oufits: 1. First appeared in a orange T-shirt and jeans 2. Tie around her neck (a navy collar, and a tie) 3. A black, strappy S&M-esque outfit During a break, Britney ate Cheetos and took a bite of Columbus' panini sandwich after he told her to. Kind of like, Try this. When Madonna arrived, she asked, Is Britney here? and pointed to Brit's bus door. She then went into makeup for three hours. She looked bad w/out makeup. Eyes all puffy. Nick Lachey showed up, supposedly as support. He's a friend of Brit's. It's filmed in same studio as Hope and Faith. Columbus is in the vid as a dancer and also helped with choreography. Guy came on Wed. night while Madge was filming. Her face lit up. She gave him a mini-wave. At one point, Columbus was making noises with some lighters and Brit was bopping her head back and forth. * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * From glenn@glenn-turner.com Tue Oct 14 18:20:53 2003 Return-Path: X-Original-To: madinfo@postal.monkey.org Delivered-To: madinfo@postal.monkey.org Received: from naughty.monkey.org (vhost.monkey.org [66.93.8.197]) by postal.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8AAE6441EAE for ; Tue, 14 Oct 2003 18:20:53 -0400 (EDT) Received: from mr10.verisignmail.com (omrnat5.verisignmail.com [216.168.230.164]) by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 264A01BA887 for ; Tue, 14 Oct 2003 18:20:52 -0400 (EDT) Received: from ms5.verisignmail.com (ms5.verisignmail.com [216.168.230.178] (may be forged)) by mr10.verisignmail.com (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.2-GA) with ESMTP id AGR37696; Tue, 14 Oct 2003 18:17:15 -0400 (EDT) Received: from ms5.verisignmail.com (localhost.verisignmail.com [127.0.0.1]) by ms5.verisignmail.com (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.2-GA) with ESMTP id ARY45365; Tue, 14 Oct 2003 18:17:14 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200310142217.ARY45365@ms5.verisignmail.com> Received: from 212.108.10.241 by ms5.verisignmail.com (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.2-GA) with HTTP/1.1; Wed, 15 Oct 2003 00:17:14 +0200 Date: Wed, 15 Oct 2003 00:17:14 +0200 To: madinfo@mlist.org X-Mailer: Webmail Mirapoint Direct 3.2.2-GA MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: madinfo@mlist.org Subject: MIR: #1045 -- October 13-14, 2003 X-BeenThere: madinfo@mlist.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: mir@mlist.org List-Id: Madonna Information Report List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2003 22:20:54 -0000 ************************************************************************ M A D O N N A I N F O R M A T I O N R E P O R T Number 1045 -- October 13-14, 2003 ************************************************************************ In this issue: * [To be released] Looks like NF is indeed happening in USA * [To be released] Blow-Up remixes for American Life EP * [Madonna in the media] MATM Music Video Details (SPOILER) ************************************************************************ From: "JimmyRad" Subject: Looks like NF is indeed happening in USA Date sent: Tue, 14 Oct 2003 01:16:11 -0400 Both FMQB and All Access list the track's radio date as 10/27-10/28. :) 10/27 Mainstream Madonna, "Nothing Fails" (Warner Bros.) In Spears' upcoming video for "Me Against the Music," Madonna lures the pop princess through a mazelike underground after-hours club, only to disappear into thin air when Britney gets close enough to touch. According to the treatment for the video, shot last week in New York with director Paul Hunter (J. Lo, Deftones), the pop singers discover they're reverse images of each other, from their dance moves to the way they dress. Britney wears black to Madonna's white. Britney is hipster to Madonna's old- school. Britney's section of the club is populated with cool kids, flaunting pink and purple hair while taking whiffs from an oxygen tank, while Madonna's stakes claim to a territory filled with men in suits, smoking cigars. Though the areas are separated by a wall, somehow Britney can sense Madonna on the other side. At first, it seems like they have a psychic or telepathic connection - but then Madonna's visage starts appearing on television monitors throughout the club, making Britney more determined to find her. As if the ESP element wasn't enough, the club proves not to be governed by the usual rules of reality in other areas, such as when Madonna finds herself a room covered with fallen leaves, where she can stand on a swing to amuse herself. But instead of wondering how the leaves got inside in the first place, she's more concerned with coaxing Britney to rid herself of her inhibitions: "Hey, Britney, you say you wanna lose control/ Sexy lady, I'd rather see you bare your soul/ If you think you're so hot, better show me what you got/ Let me see you dance." Madonna's solo, however, turns out to be but a siren's song, as she is nowhere to be found once Britney hears the call and makes it to the swing room. Over the course of several rooms, Britney searches desperately as Madonna plays an elaborate cat-and-mouse game with her. But fans can easily find both singers beginning October 20, when "Making the Video: Britney Spears" premieres at 6 p.m. Source: MTV News credit: WOB! worldofbritney.com * SPOILER * SPOILER * SPOILER * SPOILER * SPOILER * SPOILER * SPOILER * From glenn@glenn-turner.com Thu Oct 16 13:22:32 2003 Return-Path: X-Original-To: madinfo@postal.monkey.org Delivered-To: madinfo@postal.monkey.org Received: from naughty.monkey.org (vhost.monkey.org [66.93.8.197]) by postal.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 27F9C441E0D for ; Thu, 16 Oct 2003 13:22:32 -0400 (EDT) Received: from vmmr9.verisignmail.com (omrnat4.verisignmail.com [216.168.230.163]) by naughty.monkey.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D4C8A1BA9BF for ; Thu, 16 Oct 2003 13:22:31 -0400 (EDT) Received: from ms5.verisignmail.com (ms5.verisignmail.com [216.168.230.178] (may be forged)) by vmmr9.verisignmail.com (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.2-GA) with ESMTP id PLX00989; Thu, 16 Oct 2003 12:52:20 -0400 (EDT) Received: from ms5.verisignmail.com (localhost.verisignmail.com [127.0.0.1]) by ms5.verisignmail.com (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.2-GA) with ESMTP id ASB82303; Thu, 16 Oct 2003 12:52:19 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <200310161652.ASB82303@ms5.verisignmail.com> Received: from 212.108.10.241 by ms5.verisignmail.com (Mirapoint Messaging Server MOS 3.2.2-GA) with HTTP/1.1; Thu, 16 Oct 2003 18:52:19 +0200 Date: Thu, 16 Oct 2003 18:52:19 +0200 To: madinfo@mlist.org X-Mailer: Webmail Mirapoint Direct 3.2.2-GA MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit From: madinfo@mlist.org Subject: MIR: #1046 -- October 15-16, 2003 X-BeenThere: madinfo@mlist.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: mir@mlist.org List-Id: Madonna Information Report List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 16 Oct 2003 17:22:32 -0000 ************************************************************************ M A D O N N A I N F O R M A T I O N R E P O R T Number 1046 -- October 15-16, 2003 ************************************************************************ In this issue: * [Madonna in the media] Madonna's Video Tantrum * [To be released] Possible Maxi/EP Info (Rumor) * [Chart] MATM Billboard Stats ************************************************************************ From: Subject: Madonna's Video Tantrum Date sent: Wed, 15 Oct 2003 09:54:46 EDT Taken from www.imdb.com: Madonna reportedly lost her temper on the film set of Britney Spears' new music video and hit out at director Paul Hunter. The Material Girl, who provides guest vocals on the track "Me Against The Music" and stars alongside Britney in the promo, flew into a rage after discovering her costume didn't fit and vented her spleen at Hunter - who is fresh from filming Madonna and Missy Elliott in the new Gap commercial. A source says, "In the beginning it was tough because Madonna was upset about her outfit. She got upset with Paul." However, a spokesperson for the singer denies rumors of a rift, insisting, "I didn't see that happening. If her clothes didn't fit, she wouldn't be talking to the director anyway, she'd be talking to the stylist." In the video, Britney and Madonna are mirror-images of each other playing cat- and-mouse in a nightclub. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: "JimmyRad" Subject: Possible Maxi/EP Info (Rumor) Date sent: Wed, 15 Oct 2003 18:57:46 -0400 * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * RUMOR * >From the reliable DJ Rico page (tinyurl.com/r2gu): NOVEMBER 25, 2003 1. 10 track REMIX MAXI SINGLE (Love Profusion/Nothing Fails/Nobody Knows me) 1. 7 track REMIX EP (into the groove/hollywood/american life/...) In another chart coincidence, this debut comes 20 years to the week after Madonna made her first appearance on the Hot 100 with "Holiday," the week of Oct. 29, 1983. There's something unique about Madonna's 50th chart entry. "Me Against the Music" (Jive) is Britney Spears' 10th appearance on the Hot 100, and the first song in chart history to include the name Madonna and the word "featuring." Madonna's first 49 chart entries were all solo efforts, despite the growing trend of sharing credit with another artist. "Me Against the Music," the first hit from Spears' forthcoming album, "In the Zone," is credited to Britney Spears Featuring Madonna. There's one more unique fact about this collaboration: It's the first of Spears' 10 chart entries that she has co-written. The track is produced by Christopher "Tricky" Stewart under the name Trixster. It's his sixth production to reach the Hot 100, and it will have to go to No. 1 to be his biggest hit. That honor is now held by Mya's "Case of the Ex (Whatcha Gonna Do)," which hit No. 2 in December 2000. Stewart's first production to chart on the Hot 100 was "Who Dat," a No. 5 hit for JT Money Featuring Sole in May 1999. Stewart's mother, Maryann, was a backing vocalist who worked with Curtis Mayfield and Aretha Franklin. He wanted to be a drummer, but his mother told him there wasn't any money in it. "She wanted me to be a producer," he says. "She wanted me to write songs, so I started writing." While Stewart is listed as producer on "Me Against the Music," Madonna is not. It is the first of her chart entries she has not produced since her remake of Rose Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" went to No. 78 in 1996. Enjoy! MADONNA.COM ASKS: Can we get an insiders point of view on how the VMA performance came about? And how were you able to keep it a secret? CARESSE: The VMA performance came about thru discussions between Madonna, her choreographer Jamie King, myself and MTV. We were trying to find a way to celebrate Madonna and MTV's 20th year anniversary by utilizing Madonna's ground breaking performance of Like A Virgin and something current. Thus the idea was born, the rest is history. Plus, we are very good at keeping things to ourselves that is how the performance idea did not get out. M.COM: Would Madonna ever do a voice role on the Simpsons? CARESSE: I don't know if Madonna would ever do the Simpson's - if a great idea came up, possibly... M.COM: Any updates on the Madonna Box Set? There are rumors going around about something being released for Christmas. Any truth to that? CARESSE: We or shall I say Warner Bros. is not doing a box set to mark her 20th anniversary - I do anticipate doing something fabulous in the near future. M.COM: Any updates on Madonna going on tour next year? CARESSE: Madonna will definitely tour but we are not sure if it will by Summer 2004 or 2005 - but it will happen. M.COM: What's in Madonna's CD player or being played the most in her iTunes right now? CARESSE: Madonna's been listening to Jeanne Moreau CDs The illustrations in "The English Roses" are beautiful. How does Madonna select artists for the books? CARESSE: Madonna chose the illustrators for each book by going through A LOT of children's books and artwork samples to narrow down the possibilities and then based upon the story content - picked out a different illustrator for each story - so they are all very different and unique. M.COM: Is the "REAL" American Life video going to ever be available for sale? CARESSE: I think the American Life video will be available at some point down the road. M.COM: Is there a video for "Nothing Fails?" CARESSE: There is no plan for a Nothing Fails video at this time - we will hopefully be shooting a video for Love Profusion next week. M.COM: I am interested in learning about the diet Madonna follows. It's the macrobiotic diet isn't it? If so, what does it entail, (ie what foods can you and cannot eat)? CARESSE: Madonna follows a macrobiotic diet which consists primarily of whole grains, vegetables and greens. Occasional fish is allowed. No dairy, no sugar, no refined foods. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Louise Norman [m3152367814@yahoo.com] Subject: U.S. 09/27/2003 & 10/04/2003 Date sent: Tue 21/10/2003 1:22 PM LOOKING AHEAD: In the 10/25 issue, "Me Against The Music" (Britney Spears featuring Madonna) will debut on the Hot 100 at #50. The Rolling Stones replaces Elvis Presley at the top of Singles Sales! In the 09/27 issue, Elvis's "Rubberneckin'" remix (by Maverick artist Paul Oakenfold) opened with 11,500 copies scanned, squeezing onto the Hot 100 at #94. The tally was less than half of what "A Little Less Conversation" talked up in 2002. This week, the Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" remix sells 8,600 to gain a #97 spot on the Hot 100, the band's first chart entry in five years. Both songs were originally recorded in late 1960s. Beyonce's "Baby Boy" (featuring Sean Paul) ascends to #1 on the Hot 100, winning Greatest Gainer/Airplay for a seventh straight week. It is an all-time record; note, however, that Greatest Gainer awards used to be reserved for entries below the top 20. Together with "Crazy In Love," Beyonce has claimed the airplay award for 13 out of the past 19 weeks. "Baby Boy" rewrites two records on Rhythmic Top 40 with 3,968 detections and 35.7 million audience impression. These two records were previously held by Beyonce's "Crazy In Love" and Destiny's Child's "Independent Women Part I," respectively. Billboard 200 ------------- For the first time since the beginning of 2002, overall album sales show year-to-year increase for two consecutive weeks. They were also the only upward weeks not caused by a shift in holiday schedules. 09/27: The death of two musicians in the middle of this tracking week evoked immediate response on the chart. Johnny Cash's "American Songbook IV" leaped #94->#22* as sales more than tripled (to 35,400). It was the music legend's highest placing since 1970. His "16 Biggest Hits" jumped #21->#1* on Top Pop Catalog Albums, selling 23,000 (an increase of over 300%). Cash also occupied seven spots on Top Country Albums, including four first-time entries; and seven spots on Top Country Catalog Albums, three of which were new. His wife, June Carter Cash, happened to have a posthumous album released during the same tracking week. It entered Top Country Albums at #34. Meanwhile, Warren Zevon's three-week album bounced from #40 to a new peak of #12* following his passing (up by 106%). Two 2002 albums, "The Essential Johnny Cash" and "Genius: Best Of Warren Zevon," appeared on the Billboard 200 for the first time at #130 and #168. As for new releases, John Mayer's "Heavier Things" floated up to the top rung with 316,500 sold. At #3, Seal's "Seal IV" was his first top 10 album, pushing 82,000 units. Clay Walker (#23) and CeCe Winans (#32) scored their highest rank ever, while Iron Maiden's #18 was their best since 1992. 10/04: Six albums debut in the top 10. DMX's fifth album is also his fifth to debut at #1; no other artists have topped the chart with their first five albums. Although, first-week sales of 312,000 is no match for the rapper's last three releases. Other new entries include A Perfect Circle (#2/231,000), Erykah Badu (#3/143,500 - her smallest SoundScan opening so far), Thursday (#7/74,000), Sheek Louch (#9/64,700), Bubba Sparxxx (#10/64,500), and Ying Yang Twins (#11/62,000). For the first time, the entire top 10 singles were by black artists. (A similar monopoly on the Billboard 200 was already achieved in the early 1990s.) Here is a list: Beyonce featuring Sean Paul; Nelly, P. Diddy & Murphy Lee; Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz featuring Ying Yang Twins; Chingy; Pharrell featuring Jay-Z; YoungBloodZ featuring Lil Jon; 50 Cent; Fabolous featuring Tamia or Ashanti; Ludacris featuring Shawnna; and Black Eyed Peas. (For those keeping score, that was 20 credits for 10 tracks.) The domination did not last long, as 3 Doors Down's "Here Without You" enters the top tier in this issue. This white-out is not surprising under today's radio climate. After the Hot 100 Airplay panel expanded in December 1998 to include R&B/Hip-Hop and Country, black artists have enjoyed bigger successes on the Hot 100. In recent years, Top 40 Mainstream radio has been playing more and more R&B/Hip-Hop hits, and with shorter delays. ("Shake Ya Tailfeather," for example, reached #1 on Top 40 Mainstream one week before it did so on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay.) In addition, Rhythmic Top 40 has shifted from mostly dance/pop in mid '90s to predominantly R&B/Hip-Hop these days. On the other hand, some Adult Top 40 and Rock hits do crossover to Mainstream, but usually with longer delays. Adult and Rock radio also spin their top tracks less frequently than R&B/Hip-Hop and Rhythmic stations. You do the math. Also in the 10/11 issue, Sarah McLachlan's comeback single "Fallen" landed on Hot Digital Tracks at #1 and #4 (two different versions). The #1 entry logged 2,500 downloads, a record for the three-month-old chart. Billboard 200 ------------- The week-to-week winning streak over 2002 extends to four weeks. 10/11: Overall album sales were a whooping 16.3% over the same week one year ago (12.5 vs. 10.7 million), fueled by seven debuts in the top 10, including an all-new top six - both of which were new records. There were a total of 13 debuts in the top 40 and 20 in the top 100. The top six all started with sales above 200,000: Outkast 509,700, Dave Matthews (sans "Band") 469,050, Limp Bizkit 325,150, R. Kelly 250,650, Obie Trice 225,900, Nichelback 200,200. For Outkast, this is their first #1, after three albums peaking out at #2. Limp Bizkit's number is a far cry from the 1.05-million debut of their 2000 album. R. Kelly's hits compilation is his sixth album to beat the 200,000 benchmark. 88,000 of Dave Matthews's solo debut (19%) were picked up through the Internet, setting a new record. The next two highest entries in the Internet chart's four-year-plus history belonged to - who else - Dave Matthews Band: "Busted Stuff" 58,500, and "Everyday" 29,000. 10/18: Sting's #3 debut marks his highest chart rank since 1993's "Ten Summoner's Tales" opened at #2; sales of 194,700 replaces "Tales'" 149,000 as the rocker's best SoundScan week. Dido's sophomore set waves from #4 with 191,600 sold. But this week's Hot Shot Debut is Bad Boy's Da Band, from P. Diddy's MTV series "Making The Band 2." The #2/203,800 opening handily beats O-Town from the first "Making The Band," which debuted at #5/144,500 in early 2001. More personal SoundScan records are set by Martina McBride (#7/122,650), Bette Midler (#14/70,650), Gary Allen (#17) and Ill Nino (#37). All the high-debuting albums better hope they don't suffer a second-week drop much higher than 50-55%, which appears to be the norm these days. Recent instances of heavy slippage included Dave Matthews (67%), Limp Bizkit (61%), A Perfect Circle (66%), Murphy Lee (61%), and Fuel (61%). Seal was an exception with his second-week erosion of 28%. Spears, 21, reportedly drafted her music idol, 45, for a small role in the video for "Me Against The Music." While the single is now out and running, Spears's new album will not be out until next month. In its review of "Me Against the Music," The New York Times says the dance-floor ditty is more rhythm track than song. "The real question is, who's using whom?" writes critic Jon Pareles. "(I)t's Madonna who comes out ahead: compared to the thin, computer-tuned husk of Ms. Spears's voice, Madonna sounds like a real singer." The "real singer," meanwhile, has an almost-new CD ready for the Christmas season, reports Billboard. Nov. 25 will bring Madonna's "Remixed & Revisited," a seven-song EP that includes remixes of tracks from this year's "American Life" album as well as the previously unreleased song "Your Honesty." "Your Honesty" was recorded during the 1994 "Bedtime Stories" recording sessions, and was co-written and co-produced with Dallas Austin. The EP also features the Jason Nevins radio mix of Madonna's forthcoming single, "Nothing Fails." "Remixed & Revisited" will also include the "Like a Virgin/Hollywood" medley so memorably introduced and performed at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards with Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Keith Caulfield [keith@keithers.com] Subject: Second 12" "Me Against" out 11/11 Date sent: Mon 20/10/2003 8:33 PM A second 12" vinyl single of "Me Against The Music" is coming out in the U.S. on 11/11. Since the first 12" vinyl streets 10/21 and is a single disc set with only two versions (and two instrumentals) -- and it's only $5.98. May be a little negative about the present tense, but she has some good points, especially about Madonna's fixed stature and comparisons to Britney: CP: In my lifetime I've seen two moments when I felt we were moving toward an expanded perspective on life, a more flexible attitude toward issues -- authentic free thought, without this horrible, irreconcilable polarization between left and right. The first moment was the 1960s, when thanks to pioneers like Lenny Bruce and Bob Dylan, you could say anything and be anything. You could be eccentric and opinionated on the left, but it was all shut down into the dogmatic, politically correct era that reached its height in the 1980s. The second liberating moment was the early 1990s, when Bill Clinton emerged as a moderate Southern Democrat. There were independent voices all over the political spectrum -- Rush Limbaugh, Howard Stern and Madonna, who was at her zenith. And then it all shut down again. Salon: On to another, possibly declining, important cultural figure: Madonna. CP: Speak of schizophrenia! Within two weeks, Madonna can appear on the MTV Video Music Awards dressed in black leather as Vampira, Queen of the Night, and in her persona of polygamous dominatrix smooch Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera on the lips, then suddenly turn up in a matronly flowered dress in London kicking off her new children's book, pushing Kaballah as the future of mankind, and saying oh, pooh, it was just an innocent kiss between friends. [Sighs.] What can I say? Madonna remains a major star -- actually much bigger around the world now than she is in America. She got overexposed and lost ground in the U.S., then gravitated toward London and ended up marrying an Englishman. Because there are few real stars in the U.K., she created a big platform for herself there. But I do feel there's something wrong with that kiss. Great stars have to learn to age gracefully. I loved it when Stevie Nicks -- who's a true artist -- zinged Madonna for "kissing girls half her age." She was right. Madonna was trying not only to compete with these figures she spawned but to overshadow and upstage them and suck them dry. It was very unfair to Britney Spears, even though she looked spectacular in white lace -- as nubile as a real bride. Jennifer Lopez was smarter and opted out. It's crucial for the great stars to find a persona that allows them to mature with their fan base. Look at Cher! Just when Madonna's latest film and album were flopping, there's Cher on the charts for a year with her song collection. Cher has a natural warmth and rapport with the audience. But Madonna feels like she has to pound everyone into the ground like a steam hammer. And that children's book! When I found out what the plot was, I was absolutely shocked -- and I'm rarely shocked, particularly by anything that Madonna does!
