Okay, getting some work done.

You'll be amused to know that I've now moved away from the VC build 
environment (although obviously still using the MS Platform SDK and 
compilers) and I'm using gnumake and a makefile :-)

I found when I learned kernel development that the process of requiring 
a reboot between tests induced me to take much greater care, and so to 
have a much firmer comprehension, of the code; to write it correctly, 
and then run it, rather than to write it and then run it till it seems 
correct.

I suspect (and this is my motive) that moving away from source level 
debugging will have a similar effect.
