(fax) bedroom speakers

Along similar lines as the 5.1/center channel discussion...  What kinds of 
systems do people use to listen to music as they fall asleep, and how is 
it configured?

I've decided I've had it with headphones while sleeping, they simply make 
my ears ache and get tangled up if I fall asleep with them on.  So 
speakers are a must - but it has to be clear and no-hiss at low volumes, 
as I still would like to be nice to my neighbors, which rules out many of 
the audiophile-grade works.  I'd like true stereo separation while lying 
face-up, and a separate bass module that fits under the bed or in a corner 
would probably be best.  How about positioning - speakers mounted on the 
wall above the bed, or on each nightstand?  A bonus would be a 
configuration that works well if I'm just hanging out in the bedroom as 
well.
