The same thing happens everytime with any form of entertainment.
A certain style becomes a hit then less-talented people try to cash in
by creating lower quality versions of it then finally some no-talent
corporate suit tries to manufacture on a massive scale in the interest
of making an easy buck.
Happens with any genre of music, movies, tv, video games, you name it.
Unfortunately, you can't manufacture genius so all they can do is
xerox and water it down into krap. It's how most of our bad media
comes about.
I wish people wouldn't just 'give up' on ambient. At least not just
because of trends that are ultimately inevitable.
