I'd say this is pretty on-topic!  I use Goldwave (goldwave.com).  It's
shareware and been around forever.  It's the only shareware I've felt
compelled to register in the last 5 years!  I use it for all of my FAX
fixer-upper projects as well as general splicing and fading.  The
features should blow away Nero.  Also, the author is really helpful and
quick to respond.  I believe he's Canadian.

Try it out: it costs you nothing.
