(fax) Re: DTS 5.1 music - is it or isnt it ?

Sorry, I call pure BS here about 5.1 only being 4.1.

There's nothing mandating that center be used as voice. Listen to the first DTS release on FAX -- Virtual Vices V -- he uses the center channel for all sorts of stuff. Guitars, synths, you name it.
Think a little please. They didn't add a center channel *just* for voice. It has the full range just like all the other channels (excepting the sub).

I also call BS about downloads not being hifi. Perhaps you should have specified more clearly. Lossy codecs now days attain fairly hi-fi results at around 192 kb/s VBR. But there are plenty of lossless codecs. FLAC for example... is an exact duplicate of whatever's on the CD, at about half the amount of data (if you can't believe that, then just think of a specialized zip algorithm for wav(pcm) data with some music specific additions). Yes, some places do sell FLAC downloads, but they are far and few between unfortunately.

And I'm sorry, but I have to call BS again -- DTS stands for Digital Theater Systems. Dolby Digital is AC3. DTS is unrelated to Dolby. Glad I cleared that up. DTS > Dolby imho ;)

You seem to be mistaken as to what DTS means. DTS cannot in any way, shape, or form, be encoded with any lossy codec like MP3. FLAC can encode DTS but it needs to be decoded back to DTS-WAV for it to be played properly (unless the player application is specifically set up to check for DTS audio encoded in FLAC).

I believe that's all the BS I can find. ;)

Andrew

heck this is the first thing i have seen that has made me want to make a

reply!

Please all excuse my ignorance about the faxlist thing...all i am wondering

about is 'what are you listening on'? Downloads really are not 'hifi' in any

sense of the term (high fidelity) as in reproducing the music as it should

be(or the producer/musician)intended...

All the so called 5.1 realeases are in actual fact 4.1....The centre channel

is not used...It is a dialogue channel so has zero relevance to music..In

fact i can't comment on the .1 bit as my system goes below what subwoofers

would reproduce...

Unless 320Kb is employed you don't stand a hope in hells chance...DTS (Dolby

Theatre System)of getting a nice sound out of your system (for surround).

Martin thanks for all the great cds chap...Good luck with Air 5....If this

all goes pear shaped let me know...

Trevor, you don't know anyone who purchases music digitally? with Ipods so

popular(go to your nearest gym), most people are getting their mp3s from the

Apple store, or some other mp3 site on the web. With record stores closing

left and right, most people who enjoy listening to music, do not buy cds, as

much as they do mp3s. Would other people agree with me on this point?
